About the Player: The Broad Street Bullies was the nickname given to the Philadelphia Flyers of the mid-1970's. The name was given to them as a result of the team's hard style of play. They were big and they were mean. The team won the back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships 1973-74 & 1974-1975. They were the first expansion team to win a Stanley Cup, previously only the original six team had won. Three of the key members of the Broad Street Bullies were Gary Dornhoefer, Dave Schultz & Reggie Leach. Reggie Leach had some great season with the Flyers he won the 1976 Scoring title as well as the Conn Smythe Trophy. Dave Schultz was nicknamed "The Hammer", he was the premier NHL enforcer in the mid-1970's, he set the record for most penalty minutes in a season (472 penalty minutes during the 1974-75 season). Gary Doernhoefer was a rough-and-tumble player with scoring talent, he spent a lot of time in front of the opposing teams goal. Although he took his share of lumps from opposing teams defensemen and goalies, he managed to score a lot of goals. The Broad Street Bullies will forever be remembered for their rough a style of play and their images have appeared in popular culture in recent year, they appeared in a Simpson's episode and were referred to in the hockey movie "Slap Stick".
