About the Player:
Drafted with the first pick of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers, Ilya Kovalchuk became the first Russian born player drafted first overall. Kovalchuk had played for a couple of years with HC Spartak Moscow an RSL Club. Since joining the Thrashers as an everyday player Kovy, as his teammates call him, has set many records for the Thrashers. He is the franchise leader n scoring (379), goals (202), and single season goal total (52). Iyla has also represented the Russian men’s hockey team in the Olympics (2006 in Torino) and the World Cup of Hockey. He is a two-time All-Star (2004, 2008) and was the winner of the Rocket Richard Trophy (2004).
