Born Karol Jozef Wojtyla on May 18, 1920 in Wodowice, Poland, named Pope John Paul II on October 16, 1978. Pope John Paul II was beloved by millions, he way the first Polish Pope and held the position for 26 years. His many visits across the globe attracted the largest crowds in history. He visited over 100 countries and spoke 10 languages. He affirmed traditional Catholic teachings throughout the world and emphasized what he called the "universal call of holiness" throughout his reign.
Pope John II dedicated much his time as Pope to helping those that were oppressed and impoverished. His strong opposition to Communism is credited as one of the main reasons for its fall. After his death his successor Pope Benedict XVI waived the five-year waiting period for a cause for beatification to be opened
