About the Player Considered by many to be one of the greatest players of all-time, Roberto Clemente played the game with an elegant grace. He is known for having one of the strongest throwing arms ever. He won 12 Gold Glove awards (1931-1972), was an All-Star 12 times, National League MVP (1966) and a two time World Series Champion (1960 & 1971). Clemente was elected to the baseball Hall of Fame in 1973 following his tragic death, he was the first player of Hispanic decent to enter the Hall. Fans still remember Clemente very fondly for both his skills on the baseball diamond and his humanitarian efforts. Major League Baseball presents the Roberto Clemente Award each year to the player follows Clemente’s humanitarian work. There is currently a campaign underway to have baseball retire Clemente’s #21 across the league as was done with Jackie Robinson. They cite that Clemente’s influence on the game is as that of Jackie’s.
