About the Player:
Yankees fans loved him, opposing players respected him and pitchers feared him. Don Mattingly “Donnie Baseball” was one of the best hitters during the 1980’s. He won a batting title (1984), an RBI title (1985), was a nine-time Gold Glove winner (1985-1989, 1991-1994), a three-time Silver Slugger winner (1985-1987) and was the 1985 American League MVP. He was the Yankees captain from 1991-1995. This sweet swinging lefty was always a threat at the plate; he could take anyone deep or poke a single. Mattingly holds the record for most consecutive games with a home run (8 in a row). He finished his career with a .307 batting average, 2,153 hits and 1099 runs batted in. The Yankees retired his number 23 and a plaque in Monument Park was dedicated to him.
